Pre-Approved!

I counted them this week, and the total was eight. Eight solicitations to get a new credit card came in my mail. Just taking a guess and assuming this to be the average, that means this year I could have gotten 416 invitations to buy now and pay later. Some conservatives say that the credit cards companies bear no portion of the blame for the fix they find themselves in when cardholders declare bankruptcy, but look at this. I have been in financial decline ever since leaving my husband in 1998, less and less able to make credit card payments as late fees (and overlimit charges due to the amassing late fees) sent the balances spiraling upward. I worked for two years for an employer who paid me more in promises than actual cash. And after a period of eight months unemployment, taking freelance assignments and temp gigs to pay rent and get food, I was completely unable to make any payments at all. Now I'm involved in Chapter 7. My credit record looks like a financial bloodbath. How anybody can consider me the ideal candidate for a credit card is beyond me. Yet here come the offers. Pre-approved. Here's a check you can apply to the purchase of some luggage. Here's a special bonus incentive. Stick this sticker. Just return the enclosed response. This is fucked up. Are people like me targeted? Or are we filtered out, and more financially fit households get twice as many offers? How many do you get?
