The Smurf-loving ubergeek I mentioned in the last entry came into the South Lab last night to tell me that he is NOT an ubergeek. He named a few other people whom HE considered ubergeeks. But that's when I told him of a conversation Napalm and I had the previous evening, about how real hackers don't consider themselves hackers until somebody else brands them as such. It takes a certain amount of humility and awareness of just how much they DON'T know. Even though he may be metaphorically a dog standing next to an elephant, in terms of geekitude, I would count as the ant standing next to the dog. From this perspective, yes, he is an ubergeek. And I pointed out that the other people whom he considered ubergeeks, if you confronted them with that, would probably deny it and give you the names of the people THEY thought were ubergeeks. He grunted and nodded, but I don't think he was happy with that.
