Wedding Afghans

Right now I'm slowly making my way through a book called The Hacker's Diet. I hadn't planned on dieting when I took a look at this, but it's grabbing my imagination, and I might wind up trying it. It's an approach to weight control that I can appreciate - from an engineering and management point of view, and it's written by the guy behind AutoCAD. Sometimes the pitch is a little too much, too infomercial-ized, but the ideas are very intriguing.

I say "slowly" up there because our Internet connection has been up and down a lot, especially on rainy days. I don't get it - the cable TV doesn't go out when it rains, just the network. What, do they have a router sitting outside the building or something, and it gets waterlogged?

The good side is that when the Internet is out, it gives me more time to work on the afghan. I'm making a granny square afghan for a couple of my friends who were recently married. We didn't get to make it to the wedding, and that made me pretty sad.

The afghan is a little over 5% complete right now, which is a lot considering I've only been working on it for a few days. I've never completed a full-size afghan before - so far only several baby-size ones. I tend to lose interest in the project. But this time I have a plan to add some variety and to make the path of progress plain. I'm extremely progress oriented - I need that positive feedback. My granny used to make afghans by crocheting a couple hundred granny squares and putting them together.

I already know that her method would drive me to madness. Very nearly already has, in fact. That was a previous project.

This afghan, if I were to make it entirely of the standard sized granny squares, would total 240 of the little things. However, this design calls for some rows as well, and also some extra large squares, which are four times the size of the smaller ones. That'll mix it up a little.

If this method and pattern prove to work out really well, I'm going to also make one for the Captain at Sun Yacht and his bride, who are getting married this very month. I also can't make it to their wedding, which is a shame, because I've known him for a few years now, and never thought he'd settle down and all that. But his bride sounds like a very impressive person, and everytime I talk to him, he sounds glowingly happy. That makes me happy.
