Recycled [dw] about My Home

Posted to [dw] last Sunday:

I have used tools already!  I have used my power drill to install my dustbuster rack.  :-)
Ok, my apartment is on the basement floor, so my windows are at sidewalk height.  The tiled sills are nice and deep for putting things in, and many residents do.  I put a flowerpot Duncan decorated for me in one sill, a wooden gecko his dad gave me in another, and my joyous Hoi Toi the Laughing Buddha is in the one in the living room.  The fourth window faces the street, and I don't want Spodie to be seen from the street (there is a no pet rule that is not enforced, but still...), so the blinds are closed and propped shut by two beehive shaped banks full of pennies, and my massive Blade Music crystal nut jar, also full of pennies.

The apartment consists of a bedroom and a living room, joined in the middle by a kitchen.  Bathroom is off the bedroom, behind the kitchen wall.  Carpets in bedroom and living room are beige in color, all walls white, and kitchen floor is white and beige vinyl. The bathroom is a bit hard to look at, all done up in pink tiles and faded black tiles, and pink porcelain. But I can live with it.  Rebar was horrified that I bought a black shower curtain for this.  "What a party pooper!" he said.  "Well that bathroom doesn't give me much for design options," I told him.

Bedroom has a ceiling fan.  Kitchen has an A/C unit. Smoke alarm is WAAAAAYYYY too touchy.  It objected to the making of toast.

There is about a foot and a half of counter space in the kitchen, and the back half of that has my microwave on it.  Can opener and toaster on top.  Not much room for food preparation.  Instead of a range, there is a cooktop and a double oven (in almond), all gas.  Too bad I don't cook.

A couple shelves are up, one set over the bathroom toilet and one set in the living room for general purposes.  I don't plan on painting or wallpapering; the apartment came with a fresh coat of paint so why bother.  There are a couple maps and examples of kid art already up, and I repaired <TOOL ALERT> (hot glued) </TOOL ALERT> the Art Door where various items fell off after the kids left, by cat mischief as well as by transit.  It's leaning against the edge of the wall between living room and dining room.

Puter is in the kitchen, on a heavy ass table I hoisted off an Army post.  (Army furniture is always very heavy.)  I have a very old fashioned school desk in here too.

No cable yet.  Damn.  The cable company has no record that any occupant here ever had cable.  They may have to wire the place.  If I can afford it, there may be a cable modem in my future.

Oh, I am on the same floor as Storage and Laundry. How convenient!  I think I described the neighborhood already.

Will that do it?   *wink*  I should describe my legs now?

Posted to [dw] today:

I heard that there was a flash flood warning, but didn't see any flooding where I am.
I haven't really been paying attention to the outside world much this weekend.  Last night was a pretty late night finishing up the unpacking and cleaning up the apartment.  To those who know me, that is quite remarkable - I am NOT a homemaker of any sort.  I don't cook, and I don't clean.  But this new apartment is good and comfortable, and I want it to remain so. This is a very manageable space, not vast and engulfing like the other place, not overwhelming.

Curtains are up, and so are a few pictures.  They have to wait for the daytime so that my hammering doesn't wake anyone.  All clothes are put away, and there are homey touches, like the essential paper towel holder, and a bucket for the recycling.  Woo hoo, I live in a recycling-enabled place!

Today was my first visit to the local UU church.  We actually met in a separate building, the one for youth activities.  The church burned down and is being rebuilt.  In fact, today there was a call for volunteers, because now that the drywall is up, the painters are coming tomorrow and all the sweeping and masking needed to be done.  So a lot of us went home and changed and came back ready to get messy.  It was a good way to meet people, and gave me something to do besides calculating the sad state of my finances, which I still have to do very soon now.

When I got home, I cleaned up some more, and watched a very sad movie on TV ("Beyond Rangoon"), and then, finally, had a nap.

So that's been my weekend.  Howbout yours?
