Artistic License

Napalm has an amazing imagination. Now I know why he doesn't have comments in his journal. I can't poke at him over there for taking liberal artistic license on the yellowjacket issue from the very brief story I told him when he woke up. Very large dollops of license. It's amusing.

But he's right, the Terminix guy, when my kids showed him the nest, said, "Those aren't wasps. Those are bees." I had walked up from the parking lot, as we'd just arrived from the grocery store, and I'd had the kids run ahead to show him where to look.

"They look like yellowjackets to me," I said.

"Yellowjackets are a kind of bee," he says.

I gave him a long silent look, and he sputtered. "Look, see how they are swarming all around there like that? Wasps don't do that. They spend most of time in the nest or hunting; they don't swarm all around like that."

I kept looking at him. Finally I had mercy and said, "So now what?"

"I need protective gear. I can't get up there with them swarming like that. I can't get back until Thrusday." After about 20 minutes on the horn with his main office, he told me that this type of thing wasn't in the contract our apartment complex has with them, so they have to refer in another company to take this over.

Meanwhile, it's bug spray and a strange scrabbling sound in the wall.

Man, I thought everybody knew that yellowjackets are wasps. I certainly would have expected the Terminix guy to know. I guess commercials lie.
