Bless My Homeland Forever
Remember, in The Sound of Music, when Captain Von Trapp is singing at the festival with the guitar in the darkness, with a sole spotlight, and he's singing "Edelwiess"? Remember how he is gazing out into the darkened crowd of his fellow Austrians, guarded by Nazis all around, and he is slowly singing this song, this old traditional song? Remember how he begins to choke up, because he loves his country so much, so very much, and with heartbreaking sadness, because of what's happening to it, what it's becoming? He chokes up and cannot sing anymore.
This is how I feel when I sing the "Star Spangled Banner", or even hear it. Precious song. Precious country. Heartbreaking sadness.
